MULTICENTRIC VS MULTIFOCAL

• Multifocal breast cancer refers to multiple primary breast cancers in the same quadrant, typically the same duct system, within 4-5 cm of each other.  

• Multicentric breast cancer refers to 2 different-appearing irregular masses in different quadrants of the same breast at least 5 cm apart. 

  • Tx is typically mastectomy due to higher risk of local recurrence

• Staging is determined by the largest individual tumor.
