US is not typically used to evaluate calcs found on mammography unless there is an associated mass or calcs are extensive (usuallys spanning >2 cm)
US can be useful in the setting of highly suspicious calcs to look for a mass that may represent invasive component and potentially guide bx
Purpose
Screening - asx w/o personal h/o breast CA, women w/ dense breasts
Diagnostic - abnormal findings on screening studies, signs & sx of breast CA, h/o breast CA, implants
Evaluation of palpable abnormalities
Determine if lesion is real
Characterizing masses
Determining extent of dz (staging)
Limited role in evaluating calcs
Staging Sono: Looks for satellite lesions, multifocal (>1 lesion in same quadrant), multicentric (>1 quadrant involved) dz
US following MRI
Lesions detected on MRI may be mammographically occult
